Chancellor Returns Home From Visit to Greater China

Chancellor Carolyn “Biddy” Martin returned Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, from a 12-day tour of Greater China that included stops in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taipei. Click on the UW China page to see the Chancellor’s comments reflecting on the trip.

Also, click on the following link to see a China Daily report on the Chancellor’s meeting with representatives from Beijing Sports University. The article called the current group of Chinese Champions spending six months on the UW-Madison campus “the first time in the history of new China that such a large group of elite athletes has been sent abroad to study.”

Other highlights from the trip included:

UW-Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin and Beijing Sports University Vice President Chi Jian.

  • A meeting in Beijing, hosted by Oshkosh, of representatives from Wisconsin businesses active in China.

  • An address, titled “Private Support and the Public Good,” by the Chancellor to the annual meeting of the Beijing Forum, followed by a live teleconference with a classroom of students back at UW-Madison.

  • Visits with both the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Hong Kong Baptist University.

  • Receipt during a press conference in Taipei of a collection of 30 celebrated Chinese-language feature films.

  • A conference with Taiwan Vice President Vincent Siew, Premier Wu Den-yih and others.

  • Visits to National Taiwan University, which has 44 UW-Madison alumni on staff, and also to National Taiwan Normal University and National Chengchi University.


Taiwan Gift Exchange

Chancellor Martin met with Taiwan Vice President Vincent Siew and others during the UW-Madison delegation visit to Taipei.

“The two alumni events held in Hong Kong and Taiwan were a great success and the alumni and parents were thrilled to meet the chancellor and her delegation. Our alumni are our best friends, advocates and ambassadors.”
