The Wisconsin China Initiative, working with International Student Services and the Center for the First-Year Experience, coordinated a second annual program to meet with incoming students and their parents in China prior to the start of the new school year.
The “New Student Welcome Sessions” for the Class of 2022 were held in Shanghai and Beijing in June, with venue sponsorship provided by EasyTransfer.
At the May 2017 pilot version of the program, close to half of the approximately 350 newly accepted Badgers from across China – along with 75 parents – were able to attend the sessions. This June, the sessions hosted an even larger percentage of new students: over 250 students, along with almost 200 parents, joined the sessions.
Attendees met with UW-Madison faculty, staff, alumni and current students in afternoon sessions designed to prepare them to make the most of their campus experience.
Families traveled from as far as Xiamen, Chengdu, Xi’an, Dalian, and Hohhot to attend the events.
Teams from the Chinese Undergraduate Student Association (CUSA) assisted with both sessions.
“I learned a lot about my future college life in the University of Wisconsin-Madison.,” commented one student.
“While focusing on academics, students should also think about joining social and sports activities,” said another.
Planning in underway for the 2019 New Student Welcome Sessions, which will be led and organized by International Student Services.
